John is an active participant in areas of work that aim to improve society's understanding of the needs and aspirations of people with a Vision Impairment or other disabilitys. John provides voluntary input to supporting organisations, aiming to make society a more inclusive place. John works to help organisations provide better access to the provision of goods and services for people with a Vision Impairment or other disabilitys.
John has helped with fundraising for GDBA since he was given his first Guide Dog in 1983. He also takes part in awareness raising exercises on behalf of GDBA and assists with mobility and awareness projects.
John is a member of Guildford Borough Council's Access Committee, which aims to improve access to Guildford Borough and its services for disabled people. it also aims to improve the understanding of Guildford’s residents and businesses as to the needs of, and access issues experienced by disabled residents and visitors to the borough.
John continues to work with members of the Nomad Theatre in East Horsley, to produce a series of radio plays, which are circulated to Vision Impaired people in Surrey. he also supports the theatre with Jan in providing vision impairment awareness to staff working with vision impaired visitors.
John previously worked for SAVI and now contributes time as a volunteer, producing the audio version of their quarterly newsletter and the quortally audio magazine, Out of Sight. Out of Sight John also works on several on-going projects including Progress in Sight, which is working to improve the lives of Vision Impaired people in Surrey.
John is a Trustee on the governing council for SeeAbility. he aims to support the needs of SeeAbility's vision impaired service users, and to support the organisation with his welth of personal and professional expirience
John chairs the two yearly meetings of the Talking Newspaper Group for Surrey. The aim of the meetings is to enable Surrey Talking Newspapers to get together, compare notes, and to further their knowledge of technology, information and people, which will further their own service and be of interest to their listeners.
